Magazine Covers

These are magazine covers that I created to show off some of my technical graphic skills. I wanted to use images of my friends and illustrations I made for these projects in a variety of styles. I used already established magazine covers for these mockups, to show that my designs can be diverse, as well as practical.

Rodeo!

I was commissioned to make the posters for an event at Goldsmith's University, my alma mater. The event was celebrating the end of a BA Design module, called "Cowboys, Cults, and Coney Island". I was inspired by vintage cowboy movie and horror film poster. I used my photoshop skills to make them look gritty and realistic, like you might find them peeling off a closed picture-house.

The Human System

The Human System

The Human System is my final project from the BA Design program at Goldsmiths' University. It is an exploration into the aesthetics of glitches and technology, and a resource for the disabled and chronically ill communities.

The website, www.thehumansystem.online, is a multifaceted online archive and forum. It is a place for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses to come together, express their concerns, advocate for themselves, discuss their issues with those like them, and create an online community.

The Human System makes use of the concept of glitches, creating and utilizing a defined aesthetic, inspired by technology, and more specifically, the computer errors and malfunctions commonly associated with glitches. I coded The Human System myself, almost entirely from scratch, and it is my first foray into both coding and web design.

This is my VIVA for Goldsmith's BA Design. In this, I explain the entire process behind The Human System, from theoretical to technical.

Billy Kazaam

Billy Kazaam

Billy Kazaam is an ongoing multimedia project, designed to be a performative alter ego for me. Initially designed as a response to a brief about escaping something, Billy Kazaam allows me to escape myself, letting me explore different aspects of design that don't fit into my usual practice.

Billy Kazaam currently has one EP available on streaming platforms, as well as a few singles. Upcoming work includes music videos, a line of merchandise, and live stage performances, with bespoke visuals and stage design.

Where I Stand

Where I Stand

Where Is Stand was my first professional brief. We were asked to innovate "Think-Ins": live, unscripted discussion panels that allow public input into the journalism that happens at Tortoise Media, with each session pertaining to a different topic or recent headline.

Our group attended a Think-In for research, and we found that the seating plan created a power imbalance between the moderators and those watching. We redesigned their seating plan into Where I Stand, a set of seating plans modelled after nightclubs, judicial buildings, pubs, The House of Commons, etc., in an attempt to restructure the flow of the Think-In's conversations, and create a more equal power balance, thus allowing for more constructive debates and conversations.

We also designed an app interface, based around the already existing model Tortoise had been using, to be used as a form of e-ticket. The ticket included a questionnaire, which asked about the user's knowledge and care of the topic for that particular Think-In. The user was then assigned a seat in one of our particular layouts, based on their responses. For example, if a participant wanted to attend a Think-In about conflict in the Middle East, and had served time there, their assigned seat would be in a more prominent position. If the layout for that day were a court-room, they might end up having a seat in the jury section.

In our process, we overplayed all the seating plans we had come up with in a live test, to create a modular seating system capable of keeping conversations moving. The idea was that for each Think-In, a different seating plan would be used. We designed promotional imagery, equipment and paraphernalia for each seating plan, all with Tortoise Media branding. Some of these included pint glasses for the pub and nightclub layouts, and gavels and podiums for the parliamentary and judiciary styled layouts.

I'm Upset

I'm Upset

I'm Upset was a rapid brief that we only had a week to work on. We were given a clip from a film or television show that utilised VFX. Our task was to recreate the effect using only practical effects (i.e: no digital effects). We were allowed to go off script from our clip, as much or as little as we wanted, but we had to use the effect somewhere in our film. We were assigned a clip from the 1993 live action Super Mario Bros movie, in which a man's head is warped and contorted in a grotesque manner. To recreate this practically, we fabricated a reflective surface that we could physically bend and warp. We then filmed my reflection in that surface, whilst warping it, to get the desired effect.

Graphic Design

I have always had a passion for graphic design. Below are several graphic design projects I have worked on over the years. The poster for the LACC Artist Lecture series came second place in the competition for having your poster be the official promotional material.

Horned Industrial

Horned Industrial is a font that I made in 2017. I wanted to test my early design skills, and create a useable font. The typeface is inspired by my favourite font, Helvetica, and my love for fantasy and sci-fi. I wanted the font to look both alien and sharp, combining soft curves, hard lines, and pointed edges.
